Betting Preview
The Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays finished the regular season with identical 89-73 records to earn the two American League wild-card spots. They’ll now face off in a winner takes it all showdown Tuesday night where the victor will advance to the AL Division Series to take on the top-seeded Texas Rangers. The Blue Jays had the edge in regular season play, but it was a close call with the Jays winning the season series just ten games to nine.
In tonight’s game we’ll see Baltimore’s right-hander Chris Tillman (16-6, 3.77 ERA) vs. Toronto’s right-hander Marcus Stroman (9-10, 4.37) on the bump.
Tillman pitched well against the Blue Jays this season with 10 runs allowed (nine earned) in 22 1/3 innings for a 3.63 ERA. That has not always been the case though as he’s 5-10 with a 5.44 ERA in 24 career starts against Toronto. Jose Bautista is 12-for-45 with three homers and Edwin Encarnacion 17-for-58 in previous meetings with Tillman. who is winless in his last three starts while failing to complete six innings in each of those outings.
Stroman was probably not the Blue Jays’ first choice to send out for this wild card game, but they were forced to burn their top two starters in ace Aaron Sanchez and right-hander Marco Estrada over the weekend to even get here. Stroman was reached for four runs on nine hits and two walks in seven innings against the Orioles in his most recent start. He struggled against Baltimore this season with a bloated 7.04 ERA with a 1-2 record through 23 frames, and the 25 year old owns 5.27 career ERA against the Orioles.
